Answering 'What Prototyping Tools Do You Use' Well

In an interview, you're asked: "What tools do you use for wireframing and prototyping?" A candidate answers: "I mostly use Figma — it's the industry standard and everyone on my team uses it."

  1. Explain why this answer, while not wrong, is weaker than it could be, based on what this question is usually really probing for.
  2. Rewrite the answer to the same question in a way that demonstrates the judgment the interviewer is actually looking for. You can invent a plausible short project detail to anchor it.
  3. Give one example of a situation where naming a different tool category (not an all-in-one design tool) would be the more defensible answer, and explain why.
