Search-Primary or Browse-Primary for a Recipe Discovery App
You're designing the primary navigation strategy for a new recipe app. Two competing proposals:
- Proposal A: search-first — a prominent search bar on launch, minimal category browsing.
- Proposal B: browse-first — curated categories (cuisine, meal type, dietary restriction, cook time) front and center, search available but secondary.
- What does the choice depend on — name the specific user characteristic that should decide this, not a general preference.
- Which user segment does each proposal serve well, and which does it leave behind?
- Propose a way to serve both segments without defaulting to "just add both and hope," and justify why your combination isn't just search as a band-aid over a weak browse structure.
