Does a Whole Novel Fit in a 128K Context Window?

An average adult novel runs about 100,000 words of English prose.

Roughly how many tokens is that — and does it fit in a 128K-token context window?

Show the words-to-tokens conversion you used, and name one thing that would push the count higher.

Solution

C) ~130K tokens — and no, it does not quite fit.

The rule of thumb for English prose: ~1.3 tokens per word (equivalently ~4 characters per token). So:

100,000 words × 1.3 ≈ 130,000 tokens

A 128K context window holds 128 × 1,024 ≈ 131,072 tokens — so a full novel lands right at the ceiling, with no room left for your system prompt, the user's question, or the model's answer. In practice you'd need to trim chapters or move to a larger window.

The rule of thumb to say out loud: English ≈ 1.3 tokens/word, ≈ 4 chars/token — then check what else has to share the window.

What pushes the count higher:

  • Non-English text — the same tokenizer spends 2–4× more tokens per word on many non-Latin-script languages.
  • Code, numbers, and unusual formatting — identifiers, digits and whitespace tokenize far less efficiently than prose.
  • Chat overhead — role markers and message framing add tokens the user never sees.
