Design Barge-In: Interrupting the Agent Without Self-Interruption or Missed Interruptions

Your voice agent speaks long answers. Testers report two opposite bugs: (a) the agent sometimes stops mid-sentence for no reason when the speakerphone is on, and (b) when users do interrupt with "no wait, that is wrong", the agent keeps talking for almost a second and then, weirdly, refers to details the user never heard.

  1. Explain the likely causes of each bug.
  2. Design the barge-in pipeline end to end.
  3. How do you choose the minimum-speech duration for an interruption, and what trade-off does it control? Use numbers.
  4. How do you test it?
