Design counterfactual recourse for declined loan applicants and name its constraints

Your lender wants to tell declined applicants "what they could change to be approved". An engineer proposes returning, for each declined applicant, the nearest point in feature space that the model approves. In your simulation, the nearest single-feature counterfactuals for one applicant were: debt ratio 0.427 to 0.196, utilization 0.557 to 0.093, income 62.2 thousand to 81.9 thousand, or late payments from 4 to 3. Critique the proposal, list the constraints a recourse system needs, and say what you would tell the applicant.
