What MCP Adds on Top of Function Calling

A candidate says: "MCP and function calling are basically the same thing — the model picks a function and calls it either way, so I don't see what MCP is really adding."

  1. Is the candidate's core observation about the model-facing mechanism correct?
  2. What, specifically, does MCP add on top of that mechanism?
  3. Give a scenario where the addition matters, and one where it doesn't.
